From the 27th of May until the 1st of June a delegation formed by our colleagues Mr. Jaap Engel and Mr. Gwendell Goeloe attended the annual IASC meeting in Paramaribo, Suriname. The Is-Lands’ Airport Safety Committee (IASC) is a group of specialists from airports in Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Suriname, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Saba and Bonaire providing guidance on all aspects of operational safety. IASC’s mission is to raise safety standards in the region to a higher level by auditing all participating airports on operational safety according to international standards and recommended practices. IASC comes together annually to visit a different member state’s airport to perform an in-depth safety audit and to share experiences.
The first two days different presentations and workshops were given by the member states and other aviation safety professionals. The presentation by the member states consisted of the latest developments and experiences concerning Safety on their aerodromes. The presentation from the Bonaire delegation was given by Mr. Jaap Engel and addressed two subjects. The first subject was the founding of the Airport Performance Unit last January and the second subject addressed the safety challenges during the remodeling of our departure hall. The presentation was received very well by all participating delegations.
During the next three days, an audit of the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport was performed. It was three long days of gathering and processing information and getting down to the nitty-gritty. At the end of day three, the auditors compiled and subsequently presented the audit report to the management of JAPI airport. All IASC members are convinced that the report will assist JAPI airport to make the necessary steps in the further development of their safety culture.
All in all, it was a very successful week where our delegation had the opportunity to meet so many other professionals with a passion for Aviation Safety. Our delegation returned with valuable experience and knowledge gained during this important meeting and are looking forward to the next meeting.
